ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 2 D'antonio, P., Beeber, L., Sills, G., & Naegle, M. (2014). The future in the past: H ildegard P eplau and interpersonal relations in nursing. Nursing inquiry , 21 (4), 311-317. D'Antonio, in his book argues that Peplau’s theory is associated with modern concepts such as client self-management, client engagement, making informed decisions and motivational interviewing. According to D'Antonio, the theory ensures that the healthcare professional understands his/her own behaviour and that of the client. D'Antonio elaborates that Hildegard Peplau theory integrates four stages of enhancing interpersonal relationship between the healthcare profession and the client namely orientation, identification, exploitation and finally resolution. Orientation according to the book is where the patient exposes the issue to the healthcare profession for assistance. The second stage which is identification is where the nurse or the profession educates the patient. A nurse-client relationship according to the author is enhanced at this stage. Exploitation is the third stage where client behaviour is modified by the nurse. Termination stage according to D'Antonio, is the last stage of the theory where the patient or client is able to manage the initial issue. The
