POLICY, POLITICS AND GLOBAL HEALTH 2 Public Policy Issue The problem I chose to write about revolves around access Mental Health services. Even with the passage of the Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008 and the Mental Health Reform Act of 2016, significant barriers remain which keep many Americans from accessing mental health treatment and support . Millions of Americans with mental illness have difficulty with finding mental health care each year. People who need treatment must navigate a broken and costly system full of challenges. Resulting in many people not being able to access mental health care when they need it most . Winokur, E. J., Loucks, J., & Raup, G. H. (2018). The policy idea would involve mandating tele-behavioral health as a service in the emergency rooms throughout the state of Illinois. Issue Selection Mental illness has become a growing epidemic that goes beyond one's race, culture, socioeconomic, or gender. Our society is significantly affected by mental illness and the lack of resources needed to address the issue adequately. There has been an abundance of mental illness related incidents nationwide, which may be linked to the lack of access to care for mental health and awareness. Mental health affects everyone, and it has become a societal problem that should be addressed with great care and concern. Issue Relevance Access to mental health significantly affects healthcare. Due to the reduction of inpatient psychiatric beds and facilities in addition to the availability of community resources; seeking care in the emergency department has become the norm for persons with behavioral health concerns. Tele-mental health is a useful tool that can be used to diagnose and assess. Tele-mental health can be as effective as a face to face visit with a provider. The nursing article effectiveness

Hilty et al. (2013) Psychiatric nurses can provide and continue to deliver care across the continuum of health care settings like the emergency room. This innovative and non-traditional means of service can make access to mental health more accessible. Tele-mental health is a well-matched service for telemedicine and can improve access to services. Ellington, E., & R., R. J. (2013). Financial Impact Mental health patients who do not have access to regular psychiatric services can cause strain on the hospital’s emergency room resources. According to the New York Times Article “Hospitals can spend close to 38.5 billion dollars a year caring for patients whose primary issue was due to mental health or substance abuse diagnosis” . Creswell, J. (2013, December 26) The upfront cost it may take to implement tele-mental health within an organization may include but
