Cat on a Hot Tin Roof , Act 2
Act 2 begins immediately after the events of Act 1, with more family members, staff, and guests entering the guest bedroom occupied by Maggie and Brick. No time has passed. This act opens with lively, even chaotic strands of conversation among members of the group, including Gooper and Reverend Tooker, Maggie and Mae, and Big Mama and Brick. These early scenes build on the previous act’s attention to the complexities of marriage and other familial relationships, such as those between a mother and son. Ultimately, however, most characters leave the stage and we are left with Brick and Big Daddy alone in the room. Whereas the first act is dominated by Maggie and Brick’s conversation, the second concentrates on Big Daddy’s attempts to communicate with Brick. In this tense, often one-sided conversation, the affinities and tensions between Brick and emerge. Both are gripped by their disgust for parts of their own lives and the world around them, which they trace back to mendacity. But while Brick craves disengagement and
