What happened? In 1960, Patrice Lumumba was the first democratically elected leader of the Congo as prime minister. After Belgium gave Congo their independance, Lumumba’s Lumumba was pan-Africanism and had a vision of uniting Congo. His vision caused him to gain some enemies along the way, the U.S and Belgium. It took two attempts to eliminate Lumumba After the failed attempt, the U.S and Belgium funneled money and aided rival politicians who seized power and arrested Lumumba. He was flown out to Katanga and while he was there, he was beaten and tortured, and eventually he was shot and killed on January 17, 1961.
Background Belgium originally had control over Congo, but due to the many movements led by Lumumba, Congo gained independence on June 30, 1960 U.S and Belgium have played a major role in shaping Congo’s destiny. When brutal economic exploitation started to happen in Congo, the U.S joined other world powers to force Belgium to take over the country as a regular colony.
