Unformatted text preview: [ REDEMPTION TO SHARECROPPING ] History 150 Discussion 304 Hughes November 12, 2007 V IOLENCE- there is no way to over-estimate the power of violence over reconstruction- violence destroyed the works of reconstruction- The Ku Klux Klan, 1866+- this became a widespread para-military organization- the Klan did not simply hate black people, they were very effective, because it chooses its targets very deliberately- its goal, ultimately, was to destroy the Republican party, and restore the antebellum Southern class to power - the Klan targets anyone who opposes the Klan- one of the most important foes to the Klan were whites that opposed them- these people undermined the supremacy and the white mans identity- vs. Republicans, labor leaders, teachers- vs. black political and economic autonomy- Who were the Klansmen?- stereotypes of gentility vs. poor white violence- social bases of a cross-class coalition- funded and lead by the wealthiest southerners- not everyone was a red-neck idiot like the stereotype says- why did non-slave holding whites join the Klan?why did non-slave holding whites join the Klan?...
