Nursing I Final Module 1 Safety across lifespan o Infants and Toddlers: Choking, drowning, ingestion of poisons, accidental injuries. o School age: Drowning, firearms o Adolescents: Suicide, homicide, motor-vehicle o Young adults: Motor vehicle o Elder: Falls Choking: If patient is coughing, encourage cough, however if patient is nodding and airway is completely blocked, Heimlich maneuver. Poisoning: Call poison control immediately Restraints: o Check the patient every 30-60 minutes o Release restraints every 2 hours for turning, repositioning and toileting. o Chemical restraints (overly used) medications: Antipsychotics, antianxiety, antidepressants, sedative-hypnotic drugs. Fall risks: Risk factors for falls and fractures, such as balance and gait impairment, dizziness, and postural hypotension, are among the most common adverse effects of medications, including antihypertensive medications and anti-depressants.
