Jessica Paul Professor Orenduff-Bartos ARH2050 Formal Analysis Paper How are we supposed to confidently live in the present if we know nothing of our ancestors or how we came to be what we are? Luckily we aren’t totally in the dark and have a pretty well established timeline of life as we know it on the Earth. Through artifacts we are able to piece history together like a puzzle and try to understand the different cultures/societies that were established in past times. Among the thousands of artifacts, we have uncovered, works of art paint us a real picture to decipher. Of the many art works I’ve examined, a tomb fresco found in southern Italy drew in much of my attention with its 4 different painted scenes on slabs of rock. From The Tomb of A Diver offers transitions and a very different observation from what we are usually exposed to in historical art, a culture that embraces homosexuality and pedophilia as normal and accepted behavior within their society. Each of the 5 scenes depicted play into one another to makeup an overall theme for this tomb; a welcoming scene to surround the dead man that is buried. There are 4 slabs that construct the walls and a fifth which is the roof of the tomb. There are two smaller slabs, 3 ½ feet in width, along with two longer slabs, 7ft long, that create the four walls of this tomb. These
