Major 2 consists of five chapters and uses different situations to show how the readers of the letter should handle situations that come their way. In this paper I will discuss who, where, and when this book was written with all of the viewpoints alongside hat the genre and the theological significance this book holds. Author The book of James is believed to be written by a man named James, but which James it was is unknown. According to the The New Testament Commentary: James, Epistles of John, Peter, and Jude, there are five different possibilities of who this James could be. The first option being “James the son of Zebedee 1 ,” but it is not believed to be him because the epistle does not include any internal or external information. Also, the writer calls himself to be a “servant of Christ” and, if it was in fact the son of Zebedee, he would have referred to himself as an apostle rather than a servant. “James the son of Zebedee” is also believed to have died as a martyr before the book is believed to have been written 2 . Another possible option is “James the son of Alphaeus 3 ,” but there is not much information on this apostle and if he wrote the epistle he would have include more on his life. The third option available is “James the younger 4 ,” we know nothing about his life other than his name was in reference to his age or his body. The fourth James that is considered is “James the father of Judas 5 ,” but again we do not have much information on him. Lastly, “James the brother of the Lord 6 ” is considered to have written the book of James. 1 Kistemaker, Simon. Major 3 This is the most popular opinion and the traditional teaching point 7 . It is said that while Jesus was on earth his brother did not believe in him, but after his resurrection he appeared to James. This is when James became a believer in his brother, Jesus. After this occurred James became the leader of the church in Jerusalem and began furthering his brother’s work. There is still some objections to this viewpoint being that since James native tongue would have been Aramaic he would not have been able to write such a letter in Greek. The author, again, refers to himself as a servant and not a brother of Jesus. I personally believe that James, the brother of Jesus, is the
