Unit 2 Assignment Between July 5, 2015 and January 31, 2016, a total of 19 people were found to be ill with Listeria in the United States. There were 9 states involved and New York had the highest case count of 6. All 19 people infected were hospitalized, and one resulted in death. Evidence showed that the Listeria traced back to packaged salads that were produced at a Dole processing facility in Springfield, Ohio (CDC, 2016). In January 2016, Dole recalled all salad mixes that were produced that this facility, and ceased production until the outbreak had ended. Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes (CDC, 2019). It is most commonly spread by contaminated food and primarily effects pregnant women, newborns, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune systems. Listeria can cause many things such as, infections in the bloodstream called sepsis, meningitis, encephalitis, and other parts of the body.
