Ramirez 1 Alma Ramirez Professor Stewart Physiology 1 23 June 2019 Action Potential Action potential are electrical impulses that neurons and muscle cells use to be able to communicate and conduct information if there is a stimulus. Action potentials all have the same amount of degree no matter how strong a stimuli is, when there is a strong stimuli it will result in a consistent action potentials in a specific time frame. There are four stages to action potential the resting potential, depolarization, repolarization and hyperpolarization. The action potential starts at a resting potential which is -70mV this is when the membrane is at rest. Once the body detects a stimulus the first gate that opens is sodium voltage-gated channel, once that gate opens it is called depolarization. The sodium ion will then go into the cell which will cause the inside of membrane to be more positive, the positive ions will then build up and reach a point called threshold. Threshold is a level of depolarization were if it reaches this point the action

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
