Electoral College Essay Electoral College Structure and Function The electoral college can be defined as a structured system that helps prevent “majority tyranny” (Patterson, 2013) with electoral votes that elect the president of the United States of America. Electoral college was created by the framers of the Constitution. The electoral college, for the framers, “left responsibility to the people but to also prevent a pure majority.” (Patterson, 2013) They were trying to prevent a tyrant from wooing the people and becoming president from a direct election by the peoples votes. There is a total of 538 electoral votes. Electoral votes are proportionate to the number of members in Congress: 435 in the House of Representatives, 100 for the Senate, and 3 for the District of Columbia. (Patterson, 2013) Electoral delegates match each states representation in Congress and are subject to change with each updated census, which are completed every ten years, based on population numbers. Electoral v. Popular Forty-eight states have a “winner-takes-all” policy in place so that the electoral votes are counted towards the popular vote in that state.
