Qualitative Study 2 Language is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “ the words, their pronunciation, and the methods of combining them used and understood by a community.” The community is what generally comes to a consensus on what is said and what it means. So, when we talk to one another, a lot of times we may have to codeswitch so that we can understand what is trying to be said to one another, since we generally form communities with those immediately surrounding us. For me, the community immediately surrounding me is influenced by my location. I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where people are famous for pronouncing dog like “doug”, enunciating the “o” vowel in words such as ‘you’ and ‘too’, and using slang such as “boofing” to describe something that stinks. These were never words that I started off opening my mouth saying, but the people around me said it, and through continued exposure, I began to say the same things. Similarly, this process occurs regardless of geographical location to many other people. Because of code-switching however, we are able to speak to one another in ways that
