Nutrition and Human Development Section: Wk A/Mon & Tues Quiz #5 - Chapters 8 & 9 Name __________________________ Instructions: Answer the following questions to the best of your ability. 1. Water is the most important nutrient because it regulates the body in many ways. List three different ways in which water maintains homeostasis (body regulation). What might occur if the amount of water lost from the body is greater than the amount of water consumed? 1. Water helps dissolve minerals, amino acids, fatty acids and almost everything in the body that needs to be broken down. 2. Water acts as a cushion for the organs in our body. In this way water protects us from major injuries. The womb is full of water, the spinal cord is surrounded by water and there is also water in the digestive and respiratory tracts. 3. Water helps maintain our body temperature. When the organs work they produce heat. If this heat builds up under the skin It can be very dangerous to the body. What happens is heat travels through our blood to a layer right under our skin then our skin lets out sweat. As the sweat disappears the heat leaves the body.
