Week 2 – Functional Neuroanatomy January 14, 2019 Central and peripheral nervous systems: - CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord - PNS consist of nerves that connects brain to body parts - PNS divided into automatic and somatic systems Autonomic and somatic NS: - Automatic (beyond our control) and somatic (we can control) systems - We can control the SNS by making conscious decisions (grabbing) Neuroanatomical correlates of intelligence: - Bigger brain = more intelligent Gyrus: - Bump Sulcus: - Depression Reasons for brain “shrinking” in modern humans (compared to homo sapiens): - We are becoming less intelligent - We are getting more intelligent/efficient, brain is able to handle it - Not size but complexity Forebrain vs. midbrain vs. hindbrain: - Forebrain: o Largest part of brain o Cerebrum o Thalamus Relaying sensory signals to the cortex Functionally organized Specific areas devoted to sensory systems Regulates consciousness o Hypothalamus Linking the nervous system to the endocrine system via secreting neurohormones

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
