Most students, if not all, have found themselves cheating at one point or another. Many of these students simply get lectures. However, some schools punish this lack of integrity harshly. Those schools are run by honor codes. Honor codes are debatable, but they overall make a positive impact on the educational careers of students due to the decrease in cheating they influence and the rise in trust amongst students. Students who agree to honor codes have shown they are less likely to cheat out of fear of expulsion. Certain students are more prone to report when they witness cheating either because they help run the honor code system or because they believe it is unfair in comparison to themselves, who work hard to get good grades, and “according to research by Donald L. McCabe, a professor of management at Rutgers University who specializes in student integrity, students at colleges with honor codes - typically student enforced - cheat less than their counterparts elsewhere do” (Dirmeyer).
