Hate Group Paper | Santasha Sherrer Hate Group Paper Santasha Milner CJHS 430 April 8, 2019 Christine Hustdde A hate group is defined as a systematized group or movement which supports and practices hatred, violence, or hostility towards other individuals because of their race, ethnicity/nation, religion, sexual orientation, or disability that is not their own (Hate Crime Data Collection Guidelines, 1999, section 1.2, p. 1). According to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation, a hate group's "primary purpose is to promote animosity, hostility, and malice against persons belonging to a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin which differs from that of the members of the organization." The Ku Klux Klan is a hate group that has been around since reconstruction at the end of the Civil War. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was formed December 24, 1865, by six college students in Pulaski, Tennessee. The Klan quickly mobilized as a vigilante group to intimidate Southern blacks - and any whites who would help them - and to prevent them from enjoying basic civil rights. Nathan Bedford Forrest, a former Confederate general and known as a white supremacist became head of the Klan “grand wizard” (Head, 2016, p.2). Allowing those who were members to kill with freedom and let others like them eliminate activist as they please without federal authorities (Head, 2016, p.1). In many
