Using the job characteristics model, discuss how a manager can enlarge or enrich a subordinate’s job. Using the job characteristics model by Hackman and Oldham there are five core characteristics; skill variety, skill identity, skill significance, autonomy, and feedback from the job. All these core job characteristics bring about the meaningfulness of work, responsibility, and understanding. A manager can enlarge or enrich a subordinate's job by understanding employees’ motivations and how they perceive responsibility and ownership in their positions. For a manager to find this out takes a manager that communicates well and lets the employees "fly". Allowing freedom to grow to find their identity and significance in their work. When that freedom is allowed responsibility and ownership are established. What are the pros and cons of the job characteristics model? The pro on the Job Characteristic Model is that it is broken down for a manager to understand steps that encourage growth for employees. The con is that all people are different, and some
