Understanding the aforementioned corner, it is important to understand the history of these high suicide rates. In 1998, Japan was hit with a much higher rate of suicide than the previous year, 1997 which caused a major crisis. Suicide rates in 1998 increased from 24,391 to 32,863, which was a 34.73% increase. The main attribution for most of the suicides during that time was the downward turn of the economy in the 1990’s. According to Chen, Choi, Mori, Sawada, & Sugano (2015), “…individual bankruptcy rate[s] were found to be positively associated with the suicide rates of all males, males aged 20–39 and males aged 40–59…” (p. 254). Although the suicide rates were not exclusive to males, however they were found to be more than twice as likely to commit suicide than females in the same age range. Nevertheless, female suicide rates also increased as well during 1998. There was also a positive inverse correlation of savings and rate of suicide, according to Suzuki, Kashima, Kawachi, &
