Lecture 9 Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal: Communication that occurs between at least two interdependent parties Norms: Our interactions have guidelines that limit our behavior in certain ways and direct our behaviors Morning routine gives us a script to follow Helps reduce complexities and uncertainties in our life More cognitive and emotional stress on us when situations are unpredictable Roles: Set of behaviors that apply to certain class of people Gives us predictability 1. Expected Roles: How you should play a role 2. Enacted Roles: Reflects how it actually happens and how you actually play the role 3. Interrole Conflict: two different roles at once a. Roles do not play well together (friend/tutor, but the person you are tutoring does not pay attention while you are putting in the work) 4. Intrarole Conflict: When we understand roles differently a. Interested romantically in someone and they say :are we dating” b. To you dating means hanging out, occasionally hooking up c. To them, dating means 24/7 love and emotion Disclosure: Moment where we start to talk about yourself
