GEOG 108 – Sept. 19, 2018 - Laws of thermodynamics o The fields of thermodynamics studies the behaviours of energy flow in natural systems o Laws of thermodynamics describe some of the fundamental thermodynamic truths observed in the universe - 1 st law of thermodynamics o Law of conservation of energy o Law suggests energy can be transferred from system to system in many forms o Energy cannot be created or destroyed o Also suggests that the total amount of energy in the universe is constant – fixed - 2 nd law of thermodynamics o Suggests that processes involving energy transfer only have one direction o For example, heat can never pass from a colder to a hotter body o Law also predicts that the entropy of an isolated system increases with time - 3 rd law of thermodynamics o Third law states that if all the thermal motion of molecules (kinetic energy) could be moved, a state called absolute zero would exist o The universe will attain absolute zero when all energy and matter is randomly distributed across space - Conduction, convection, and radiation o Energy moves around our planet mainly through three processes o Conduction is energy transferred in a substance directly from molecule to molecule o Conduction = the flow of heat energy along a temperature gradient o Convection is the transfer of energy by vertical mass motions of a gaseous or liquid medium o

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
