LaCuya Weathers April 13, 2019 Humanities Research Paper Draft Buddhism Buddhism and Siddhartha Gautama Buddhism was founded in the late 6 th century B.C.E by Siddhartha Gautama who is also known as “The Buddha.” Buddha was born around 563 B.C.E. He taught his teachings around Benares. He also did teachings around the same time the Upanishads were being written. After his six-month meditation beneath a bodhi tree he eventually attained Nirvana (or enlightenment). He was 35 at the time of this said enlightenment. He started teaching his truths because he knew what it was to really suffer, and he empathized with those who did. It seemed that even before birth Siddhartha was destined for greatness. It was said that his mother Maha Maya dreamt that a white elephant with six tusks had penetrated her right side, which was her way of saying she was with child. She also knew he would either become a world ruler or Buddha. It was also predicted that he may become a renouncer. And in order to keep that from coming to past his father would give him many luxurious worldly things. His fathers’ efforts did not work. His heart tugged and pulled him in the direction he was destined to be in. Buddhism originated around 2,500 years ago and is not really a religion but more so a philosophy or way of life. It now has over 300 Million followers worldwide. It has gained much popularity in the western culture and has many logical answers for a lot of
