Benchmark – Social Self Generally, people look for ways to feel good about themselves. Self-enhancement is the desire to maintain, increase, or protect positive views of the self. This goes hand in hand with self-verification because people strive for stable, subjectively accurate beliefs about themselves because they give them a sense of coherence (Gilovoch, Keltner, Chen, & Nisbett, 2016, p. 94). These two go together to as motives for self-esteem in the sense that people look for ways to look highly upon themselves and they want to know that people think highly of them. This puts together high self-esteem. Without a doubt, people use social media to boost their self-esteem. Cameras on mobile devices have made taking and posting photos on social media an ubiquitous practice with many of these photos being self-focused (Fox & Vendemia, 2016, p. 593). People post things on social media with the hope to getting lots of “likes” and for others to comment on how pretty they are or how it looks like they are having so much fun.
