Question 1 A Flight Control System (FCS) can simply be described as a collection of mechanical and electronic equipment that provides precise flight and reliability. The system can be divided into segments: Ground-based segment Airborne segment The Ground-based segment has the following functions: Remote control of the UAV. Process navigation data received from the UAV. Manual/remote controlled flight operation during visual contact with the UAV. On the other hand, the airborne segment of an FCS comprises of the following. An autopilot system GPS receivers An Inertial Navigation System (INS) Servo-motors The two segments are linked using wireless data-links. Figure : Flight Control System architecture

Question 2 The auto-pilot control can be divided into two main controllers: Lateral and Longitudinal controller. The lateral controller, controls the yaw-rate, roll angle and heading. On the other hand, the longitudinal controller controls the pitch angle, altitude and the speed. The lateral controller consists of 3 inner loops and 1 outer loop. The inner loops are for the following: 1. Aileron control from roll 2. Aileron control from roll rate 3. Rudder control from yaw rate The outer loop controls the heading of the aircraft. The roll angle generated from this loop serves as the desired roll angle for the inner loops. Figure : Aileron deflection controller from roll and roll rate. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
