Restaurants, as we know them today, have a long history dating back to the 18th Century. In its simplest sense, a restaurant is an establishment that sells prepared foods that are ready to eat. As eatery outlets, they focus on various types of food like fast foods, juices, fruits, various but specific cuisines. Historically, the word restaurant originated from a French term that was used to refer to a particular restorative bouillon made by steaming different types of meat (Spang 53). During the 18th Century when restaurants began emerging, the French Revolution had taken center stage and there was an increasing demand for food outlets away from home. Interestingly, the chefs who were displaced from the aristocratic households during the French Revolution set the precedent of establishing decent private dining, which is believed to be the foundation of restaurants (Mealey 1). Despite the complexity that surrounds the history of restaurants, the first of such establishments is believed to have originated in France during the French Revolution. Ideally, it is the French that defined the restaurant concept. As early as 18th Century and during the 19th Century, restaurants were already flocking the streets of Paris. As espoused by Mealey,
