Chapter 1THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUNDThis chapter deals with the background, objectives, statement of theproblem, hypothesis, significance of the study, conceptual framework anddefinition of terms.IntroductionDengue is a disease that causes death of many Filipino. Manyresearchers and doctors’ experiments and studies show different ways to solvethis increasing number of dengue cases. They have come up with the solution ofusing a mosquito coil, but it is proven that some mosquito coil products have ahazardous chemical which can possibly harm someone’s health. The researchershas think a concept of making a mosquito coil that is organic and has a fewerchemicals.Organic mosquito coil is a type of a coil that doesn’t use artificial chemicalwhich lessen the bad effect of those substances in the human body system. Oneof the most frequently use organic material is lanzones peel because of itschemical substance calledtanninand just like the lanzones peel, kakawate isalso possess this kind of chemical. Tannin is proven as an effective chemical inmaking an insecticide which Kakawate leaves also have this biochemical.Farmers who used Kakawate (as rat killers) observed that when rats eat it, theirhands stiffen, and they get bloated and die of hemorrhagic poison. The activesubstance in Kakawate is not a rapidly acting substance and needs repeateddoses for it to be effective and unlike commercially prepared mosquito coil, it isless lethal in case of accidents. In an effort to help the government combat the disease and eradicatemosquito carrier, the researchers determined the effect of Madre de Cacao(Gliricidia sepium) leaf on mosquito larvae. Studies have shown that the plantMadre de Cacao is an insect repellant and has the ability to kill many insectswhich can become potential carrier of many diseases. At present there is still awide use of commercial and synthetic chemicals to destroy pests which arepotential carriers and are expensive. The researchers are aware of the risk ofhigh toxic chemical compounds and become interested in using naturalpesticides derive from plants as a means of destroying pests hence the conductof this study.
Objectives1.) Basically, the objective of the study is to produce an organic mosquito coilwith the use of Kakawate leaves (Gliricidia Sepium).Organic by meansthat it has a fewer chemical that can harm someone’s health.
