Levels of Intervention Primary: Prevention before a person has any interaction with the substance. Often used on younger children. Secondary: reducing the extent of a person’s use after they’ve had some (limited) experience with the substance. Aimed at high school and college students. Tertiary: helps to prevent relapses for people who have a problem or who are getting over a problem. (AA)

Prevention Program Concepts We are less likely to fall prey to drug abuse if we have strong protective factors growing up. (starting before the age of 15 greatly increases chances for substances abuse) Programs are like a buffer between self and substance problems. Resilience: An inclination to resist the negative impact of risk factors.
