Cold War 1. Space race: The space race was when Russia and the United States were competing in the improvements of their space programs. Aerospace capabilities, satellites, unmanned space probes and human spaceflight were among some things that were being completed for. NASA was created during this time in the United States. At first, Russia had taken lead in the race, which only lead the US to push harder in their space progression, which eventually led us to land on the moon. 2. U-2 spy incident: The USSR shot down an american plane, which had been flying over Russia. The plane was a part of the CIA, and would fly over to take pictures. The pilot of the U-2 was Francis Gary Powers, and he was captured alive by the USSR and the U-2 completely destroyed the plane. 3. Cuban Missile crisis: It was made known that the USSR had nuclear-armed missiles located in Cuba, which is only about 90 miles from the coast of the US. The United States answered by blockading Cuba as well as putting our own missiles in Turkey.
