Sydney Adams Quick Ache Relief Lab 3.005 grams of powdered Quick Ache Relief was obtained and mixed with 50.0 ml of ethyl acetate, separating the powder into aspirin/acetaminophen and solid silica gel. Silica gel is a network solid with its Si atoms bonded with four O atoms in a tetrahedral shape. This makes the intermolecular forces between silicon and oxygen a covalent bond. Both aspirin and acetaminophen are weakly polar organic compounds, which contain dipole-dipole IMF. The dipole-dipole forces from these polar compounds will dissolve into the ethyl acetate. Dipole-dipole forces dissolve in ethyl acetate because the negative poles will be attracted to the positive pole of the ethyl acetate, and dissolve it. These dipole- dipole forces are not as strong as the covalent bond forces in the silica gel, and therefore doesn’t dissolve and remains solid. The solid silica was then filtered out and separated from the solution using a coffee filter funnel.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
