Sydney Adams Themes of Abigail in The Crucible Arthur Miller, the playwright of The Crucible, uses his story about the Salem witch trials to reply to his readers the common themes of greed, scapegoating, hunger for authority, and integrity through his characters. One of the most complex and round character in The Crucible isAbigail Williams. Through her actions and words, Arthur Miller uses Abigail to depict problems that occur not only in the time of the Salem Witch trials but also in today's current age.Firstly, Abigail is a prime example of being greedy. Immediately from the first act of the book, Abigail's greed shows through. Abigail is greedy for John Proctor's affection and continuously strives to get him to change his mind about denying his love for her. Even when he denies and denies, she still persistently strives to get him to love her. Abigail also shows greed towards the end of the book. When Abigail flees to go to Barbosa, she steals 31 pounds from Parris, her own uncle. She left him with nothing in such a chaotic time and had no one on her mind but herself.Greed is seen all the time in today's society. Everywhere you look, greed is prominent. World leaders want more and more power. Businessmen will do anything to see their company get on top. People will steal, lie, and cheat just to have the newest car or the grandest house. Whatever the case may be, greed is a driving force of many people's choices, and will often time lead to decisions that are only beneficial to himself or herself and completely disregard the wellbeing of others.
