MIAMI UNIVERSITY HISTORY 112 SURVEY OF AMERICAN HISTORY March 10, 2008 HOME FRONT LIFE A Personal Story Questions to Consider How Did Mobilization Take Place? What Were Americans Fighting For? What Was the Wartime Mood Like? Who Was Left Out? Mobilization—war finally ended Great Depression. As of 1940 the defense expenditure that government used quadrupeled (according to FDR’s request) and ended depression by end of 1941/definetly by 1942. Tremendous beaurocratic orgs. during the war. FDR created a whole large slew of these.: Economic Organization—made a number of orgs. to make sure to guarantee businesses that could profit from making military necessities. Overall it all worked!!! Things needed being produced, people have jobs, etc. Cost Plus—organization to help businesses to make money. Guaranteed that government would pay for materials and production costs and business men would get at least %5 profit. Dollar-a-Year Men—ran war effort as well as their companies and for doing so they were paid a dollar a year. Conversion—change industries producing cars, etc. into industries producing war materials. New Industries—ex: radar for first time, proximity fuse so that bomb would go off where you wanted by programming, atomic bomb of course. War Aims Official Aims o Four Freedoms—in FDR’s speech to congress in April 1941: Freedom from want Freedom from fear Freedom of speech Freedom of religion o Atlantic Charter Commitments—talked about self-determination of different countries, etc. charter with FDR and Churchill. Unofficial Aims—what individual Americans were fighting the war for.
