If the denominators ARE the same go to STEP 3 if the denominators ARE NOT the same go to STEP 2 Step 2: After finding the LCD of the two denominators , we must set up multiplication problems to change the denominators of the fractions. Write the first fraction out and multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the LCD. *Multiplication problem EXAMPLE 1/3 x 6/6 * Repeat this step for remaining fractions until they all have the same denominator. Step 3: Once the fractions have the same denominators, we can start adding. Add the numerators ; put the answer on the TOP of fraction Step 4: Add the denominators ; put the answer on the BOTTOM of fraction Step 5: Simplify the fraction (if needed) SUBTRACTING Fractions (-) Step 1: Make sure the denominators of both fractions are the same. The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
