ADDING Fractions (+) Step 1: Make sure the denominators are the same. You cannot add two unlike denominators , EVER. If the denominators ARE the same go to STEP 3 if the denominators ARE NOT the same go to STEP 2 Step 2: After finding the LCD of the two denominators , we must set up multiplication problems to change the denominators of the fractions. Write the first fraction out and multiply both the numerator and the denominator by the LCD. *Multiplication problem EXAMPLE 1/3 x 6/6 * Repeat this step for remaining fractions until they all have the same denominator. Step 3: Once the fractions have the same denominators, we can start adding. Add the numerators ; put the answer on the TOP of fraction Step 4: Add the denominators ; put the answer on the BOTTOM of fraction Step 5: Simplify the fraction (if needed) SUBTRACTING Fractions (-) Step 1: Make sure the denominators of both fractions are the same. ### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
