Penn State Forensics Science Serving Justice NAME: _______________________ PSU ID: _______________________ BMB 400 EXAM 1 KEY 21 September 2007 100 POINTS 1. Genes W, Y, and Z assort independently and are dominant over their corresponding w, y, and z alleles. You’ve set up a cross between two individuals heterozygous for each trait [ Ww Yy Zz x Ww Yy Zz ]. (a) How many gametes are possible for each of the parents in this cross? 4 Points Eight (8) (b) How many gametes are possible if the three traits are linked? 4 Points Two (2) 2. Clearly define Mendel’s 2 nd Law of Independent Assortment, and why it relates to forensic DNA analysis? 6 Points Mendel’s pea experiments illustrated that different pairs of traits/genes/loci assort independently from one another. As a result, you wouldn’t expect the forms/alleles of one trait to be inherited with the forms/alleles of another. However, if the loci are linked, they are not useful for forensic purposes as the forms/alleles of different traits/genes/loci will be inherited together (optional answer: and their frequencies cannot be multiplied together).

BMB 400 Exam 1 21 September 2007 Initials _____________ 3. Draw the structure of a deoxyguanosine (including every double bond and every “important” atom, i.e., not all of the hydrogen atoms at carbon centers need to be illustrated). 10 Points See text 4. Where do the hydrogen bonds occur between the two nitrogenous bases shown below? Indicate which side of the base pair faces the major and minor grove, and which atoms are hydrogen bonding donors and acceptors in each groove. 6 Points
