1. What is medical pluralism? Medical pluralism is a system that represents the use of more than one medical system or the use of conventional and complementary and alternative medicine to address health and illness. Such a system recognizes unconventional methods discussed throughout the text not as modalities that seek to replace but work with the dominant system that may be in place. Medical pluralism evens the playing field in terms of receiving health because it serves the people. It sees the patient as more than a money incentive and more as a human being that serves the suitable modality to address health concerns that may be persistent throughout life. Aspects of other systems are integrated to strengthen the system that is already in place, medical pluralism solves the problem of inequalities when it comes to access to healthcare. For example, one with beliefs tied to indigenous communities or holistic views on health may deny the access of care that can only be proven by technology.
