- data/13293_Chapter4_Web_Byte_Arlie_Russell_Hochschild.pdf In chapter 12, Hochschild’s EMOTION MANAGEMENT MODEL is one of the many important concepts studied in chapter 12. EMOTION MANAGEMENT starts with defining, in Hochschild’s eyes, what emotions are. Her definition says “emotions are in the context of interaction: they are not simply experienced, they are created.” (Text, pp. 506) Feeling rules and a given situation hold an enormous power over our expressive life. We create emotions and emotional experiences to fit with a situation. We create these emotions through EMOTION WORK. EMOTION WORK involves attempting to suppress or evoke an emotion we want to feel or believe should be felt in the given situation. (Chapter 12 PowerPoint, slide #s 42 & 43) Three types of emotion work are cognitive, bodily, and expressive. Expressive emotion work focuses on the inner efforts, “deep acting,” to produce a real feeling that has been self induced. (Text pp. 506)

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
