STRUCTURAL VERSUS STRATEGIC FAMILY THERAPIES 2 Structural versus Strategic Family Therapies Families who participate in therapy do so for a wide variety of issues, some more complicated than others., therapeutic approaches have specific concepts and interventions To address the problems and to guide the therapist (Wheeler, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to discuss the differences between structural and strategic family therapies to include critical points and strengths and weaknesses. Also included is an example of a structural family map of a family observed in practicum and a recommended therapeutic approach for that family. Structural Family Therapy Wheeler (2014) discusses that structural family therapy theorizes the dysfunctional family with no structure harbors symptoms and family problems.
