Frankfurt Assembly An 1848 gathering of delegates from all German states that attempted to unify them into one nation. The liberal agenda and squabbling over whose plan for the nation was best left to the failure of the gathering. Wikipedia o The Frankfurt Parliament was the first attempt to create a unified Germany o It was given the room to operate but the parliament was weak as it had no legal power (which was in the hands of the German Confederation) o The Frankfurt Parliament is the name of the German National Assembly founded during the Revolutions of 1848 that tried to unite Germany in a democratic way o Sessions started in July when civil rights were discussed. An agreement about civil rights was reached in October and promulgated in December. These civil rights would form the main foundation of many democratic constitutions in the individual German states Pan-Slavism Cultural movement that sough to united native Slavic peoples within the Russian and Habsburg empires Wikipedia o Pan-Slavism was a movement in the mid 19th century aimed at unity of all the Slavic peoples. o The main focus was in the Balkans where South Slavs had been ruled for centuries by the two great empires, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. o It was also used as a political tool by both the Russian Empire and its successor the Soviet Union. Giuseppe Mazzini Founder of young Italy and an Ideological leader of the Italian nationalist movement. Wikipedia o Mazzini's efforts helped bring about the modern Italian state in place of the several separate states, many dominated by foreign powers, that existed until the 19th century. o He also helped define the modern European movement for popular Democracy in a Republican State o Mazzini believed that Italian unification could only be achieved through a popular uprising o He relentlessly agitated the Italian populace to revolt, and encouraged, initiated, and organized numerous small and large revolts from his exile in England. o Mazzini is credited with fashioning the political idea that Italy was a country more than a patchwork of antiquated Roman city-states o Mazzini was also a key supporter of the idea of nationalism John Stuart Mill English radical philosopher whose writings advocated aspects of socialism and civil liberties Notes: o Most famous liberal philosopher Wikipedia o Giuseppe Garibaldi Italian revolutionary leader who led the fight to free Sicily and Naples from the Habsburg empire; the lands were then peaceably annexed by Sardinia Wikipedia o He is considered the Italian national hero. o He personally led many of the military campaigns that brought about the formation of a unified Italy. o
