NURS 6501, Week 8 Main Question Post Digestive Disorders Inflammatory bowel disease is a complex gastrointestinal disease. It involves two conditions known as Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis. Unfortunately, Crohn's disease affects any part of the digestive tract and can extend proximally to the entire colon. “Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes ulceration of the colonic mucosa, most commonly in the rectum and sigmoid colon” (Huether & McCance, 2017, p. 921). Narrowing of the colon is due from thickening of the mucosa caused by inflammation. Symptoms present with Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are similar they include rectal bleeding, cramping, fatigue, bloating, constipation or diarrhea and can be exacerbated and remission. Ulcerative colitis does present with recurrent episodes of bloody diarrhea as opposed to Crohn's disease.
