Stigma associated with mental health disorders outweighs stigma associated with purely physical disorders. This is because people with mental health disorders are perceived to be fearsome and should be excluded. Societies view people with mental health issues as scary and should live in isolation. Unlike people with physical disabilities, people having mental health disorders are viewed as irresponsible. They are perceived to not be in control of their actions therefore decisions should be made by others. People with mental health problems are hard to talk to hence being stigmatized. Stigma can be reduced by educating others and passing positive attitude. It can also be reduced by supporting people with disabilities by treating them with dignity and respect. One risk of a formal diagnosis of a child with mental health problems is being stigmatized ( Davey, 2015).
