This short quote was the motto that was given to Sir Francis Drake when he received his own coat of arms. Sir Francis Drake was born from a humble background and was not ridiculously wealthy or seen as a person of interest when he was first born. However, by the end of his life he had made his name and he became someone who was recognized and known around the world. Sir Francis Drake was a man who came from something small and made great things happen. He was not just an incredible explorer and sailor, but he was also impressively dedicated to destroying the Spanish. Francis Drake was born in Tavistock, Devon, England around the year 1540 (because the exact time of his birth is unknown). His father was a simple farmer, so Drake grew up quite poor. In 1549, his family was forced to flee to Kent due to a RomanCatholic Uprising because they were protestants. Just this occurrence was the first splash of fuel to the fire that was Drakes hatred for Spanish. The Spanish were Catholics, so this event just made him dislike them right off the bat. Once him and his family were in Kent, Drakes father apprenticed him to the master of a barque (English Seamen, Southey); this is when Drake begins his journey as a seaman.At around 1558 Drake became the purser of his late masters barque, and he made a voyage to the Bay of Biscay(Online Library of Liberty, The Revolutionary Writings of Alexander Hamilton), then just two years later he sailed to Guinea, and to the West Indies in 1565.
