Soriano 1 Harley Soriano Literature 230-03: Expressions of Living Past Professor Jeffrey Heiman October 15, 2018 The Axis Mundi Separatists: How Adam and Eve from the Old Testament and Enkidu from The Epic of Gilgamesh Became Dissidents of Nature The school of thought that creates the distinction between natural environments and the anthropic counterpart states that humans are generally thought to be in an environment as opposed to stemming from an environment (LeCain, 17). In the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America (1776) the founding fathers state that certain unalienable rights are endowed to them by their creator and thus reinforce the idea of natural law. Natural law is a form of law that supersedes human law and instills the idea that nature is supreme in the face of man. In the beginning, the LORD God of the Book of Genesis from the Bible created the heaven and the earth then said: “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3, King James Version). In doing so, the LORD God established order in the universe. The harmonic structure of the universe the LORD God had created had a tendency for coming into existence in pairs. This bilateral existence of various things made the world harmonic; night and day, heaven and earth, light and darkness, and dry land and the seas. The dual paradigm meant that the LORD God could assign certain qualities pertaining to either side of the duality. As opposed to the monotheism of the Bible , The Epic of Gilgamesh follows a polytheistic vision with the divine realm known as “An” exhibiting a myriad of divine entities that monitor a certain aspect of the mortal world known as “Ki”. At the beginning of The Epic of Gilgamesh there was the primeval sea and from it, the cosmic mountain emerged which consisted of heaven

Enlil, God of earth, wind, and the universal air, was born out of the unification of the heaven and earth and it was he who separated the two segments and apportioned earth as his own (Sanders, 25). Anu, the father of Gods, and of the firmament, carried the heavens but with time receded further and further into the background and in later times he was superseded by Enlil as the chief God (Sanders, 24-25).
