4 I n the fall of 1999 I began creating weekly homework assignments that asked students to read aloud a passage to a parent at home. Each of these lessons contained a letter to the parents followed by questions that addressed specific reading benchmarks and were written in the style of questions on state reading assessments. Each week parents signed the paper and returned it to school. This project was so popular and successful that it prompted me to finally compile many of the stories and lessons into a book called Week-by-Week Homework for Building Reading Comprehension and Fluency in
