FAMILY ANALYSIS 2 The Araujo Family Family may be described as a bond shared between two or more people, but family is “two or more persons who are joined together by bonds of sharing and emotional closeness and who identify themselves as being part of a family” (Friedman, Bowden, & Jones, 2003, p. 651) The Araujo family is composed of four members and I will further evaluate their family unit to assess family dynamics, values and communication. I have known the Araujo family for many years and have interviewed them to obtain more information for this full family analysis. Description of Nuclear Family Norma Araujo is a Mexican 46 year old female who is married to 40 year old Onofre Araujo and they have two Mexican-American children Elian and Lorena Araujo. Onofre is also Mexican and Elian the oldest son is 16 years old and the daughter Lorena is 11 years old. At the current time Onofre is not present because he is currently encarcerated and has been for the past 4 years. Both Norma and Onofre immigrated to the United States in search of a better future and had been in the process of legalizing their status until Onofre was encarcerated. Elian and Lorena were both born in the United States and have never been to Mexico. The family reside in Waco, Texas and have lived there for 16 years. Norma grew up in a big family and was the middle child and did not meet her husband Onofre until she was 36 years old. Onofre also came from a large family and both came to the Texas in search of work and dreams of providing a better future for their children. The children are both in school and Elian is in 9 th grade and Lorena in 6 th grade while Norma nor Onofre finished high school and only have a 9 th grade education. Onofre used to work for a cement company in Waco and Norma works as a babysitter and works from her home. When Onofre was not encarcerated he was able to provide for the family but in the last four years that he has been encarcerated Norma has been the main provider. Onofre is due to be

FAMILY ANALYSIS 3 released from jail this year but he will be deported back to Mexico causing this family to continue being apart. Culturally the Araujo family is Hispanic and both Norma and Onofre were born in Mexico. Family from both Norma and Onofre’s side live in Texas and in Mexico and come to visit them often. I consider the Araujo family as the working poor because they only have one income and live in a mobile home. Norma reports that she makes enough to pay her bills and qualifies for Medicaid and food stamps.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
