Three modalities of social influence: Norm of reciprocity is a compliance strategy, for example. Conformity : getting someone to change their beliefs or behavior to be consistent with the group’s standards. It is group pressure—the person wants to fit in. Social comparison plays a big role. When we don’t know how to behave in a situation, we get anxiety and compare to what others are doing as a guide as to what we should be doing. Example is going to a fancy dinner. If you don’t know what to do, you are anxious, you sit down and wait and watch what others are doing. Two types of social influence: Normative Social Influence - alter your behavior out of a desire to be liked, to fit in. Informative Social Influence - alter your behavior out of a desire to be correct. Example with the dinner: it is not always clear if it is normative or informative Autokinetic affect: sheriff would have people come into a room, turn the lights off, have stationary light source, ask people how far it moves. .. even though it doesn’t move, we
