April 29 Stress and health Stress : response to threatening stimuli in environment: perceive stimuli, stimulate autonomic nervous system (adrenaline, blood goes to vital organs, increased heart rate and breathing). Chronic stressors (constant physical pain): stresses that are present every single day. Like poor job, bad marriage, dealing with a sick love one. Interpersonal relationships (relationship w/ people) are usually major stressor: getting married, moving, going to jail, etc. Acute stress : day to day hassles like deadlines, unexpected problem today (like car broke down, or being late for something). Immune system is weakened/compromised by stress because autonomic nervous system is working more than usual and is using up more of your energy. General model of stress: Alarm is the first step. It is the activation of autonomic nervous system arousal. Being ready in the face of trouble gives you best chance of survival. Stimulant is present. Resistance
