How does brain give rise to mind? Stimulus-response association- leads to behavior However, you need a cognitive and neural theory -> whole is greater than sum of individual parts What are the cognitive computations? Modern analogy to computers: brain is to cognition as hardware is to software. How do we figure out how brain gives rise to mind? Brain: Take it apart, take out pieces, seeing what changes occur. Computer: map hardware, discover software, try to find out how hardware runs software. Input, Cognitive operation-information transformation, -output How do we get from input-> output? What is being computed/transformed? Biological/chemical transformation -cellular transformation- cellular, molecular and systems neuroscience, Information transformation -the particular focus of the CNS “Not simply stimulus-response associations: Cognitive transformations of the input stimulation.” Cognition does not mirror the world, it actively creates things: insert picture of two triangles Cognitive function is analogous to mathematical function
