How do we go from stimulus to stored memory? What do we store in long term memory that allows us to extract information and know the objects. How do we search long term memory. 2 theories: Template hypothesis : Original idea. Stored template = prototypical shapes. So to recognize an object is to match stimulus with the prototypical state. Problems : what happens when the image you are looking at isn’t the exact same as the template? What about variance? For example this method would not account for seeing an object in an unusual vantage point and relies on your unique vantage point from the template. LIKE A SNAP SHOT, YOUR VIEW OF OBJECT Hypothesis 2: 3D, object centered structural descriptions. Really powerful information of an object is not what we viewed about the object in the past. What you store in memory is the structure of the object itself, not how you see the object necessarily. You memorize the features of the object’s geometry . Based on principle axis of elongation and symmetry.
