(1) Western Marine Shipyard Limited, the leading shipbuilder in Bangladesh which is a group of marine professionals specialized in ship repairing and exporter of Marine goods. The shipyard is in Chittagong. The company incorporated on 11 July 2000. After 7 years it shifted into full export-oriented. For the betterment, this company should plan to convert its competencies and resources into a competitive advantage in a market that is complex and challenging by: Using the long history of maritime activity: Bangladesh has a renowned and famous history in the shipyard industry. After shifting the shipyard industry from Europe to Japan than Japan to Korean and China and then Bangladesh had a suitable environment for a long period of time. That’s why the company should plan according to the historical opportunity to expand the business. Geographical advantages: Bangladesh is a land of rivers. It has 9000 sq. km of territorial water area and almost 750 km coastline with 700 rivers and 24000 km long inland waterway. The location of Bay of Bengal is much more secure and suitable for ports as well as for the ship cutting business and export of marine goods. Utilizing the demand: High demand for tugs, water supply vessels, survey vessels, workboats, dredgers, fishing vessels, oil tankers in Bangladesh and its neighbor countries also the fuel price has made the shipping business extremely competitive should consider in the plan. Cheaper labor: Bangladesh has cheaper labor for this shipping business which is a competitive advantage for this country. Using this advantage, the company should make its own advantage over the other competitors in the industry. Making vessels & specialized vessels: The main business, building cargo/tanker vessels measured by DWT and other specialized vessels such as dredger, workboat, passenger vessels, ferry, tug boat measured by length should maintain in a proper manner for the highest profits.
Repairing policy: WMSL repairs any defects occurred within 12 months from the date of delivery. The buyer is entitled by the company to withhold of 2% of the contract price for any defects for 12 months. A policy like this free delivery, real-time services etc. can bring loyalty to the company. Foreign direct investment: Because in this industry companies need a huge number of finances otherwise bank loan to complete each project. Bank loan often reduces the profit because of extra interest rate, company prefer foreign investment. So, managing foreign business investor should think before planning.
