atomic mass, A  – The number of protons plus the number of neutrons in an  atom.                             isotopes  – Atoms of the same atomic number that have different numbers of  neutrons.                         atomic weight  – This is not a weight!  It is the  weighted  average of the atomic  masses for all isotopes of an element.  This is why the atomic weight of carbon is  12.011 and not 12.00. (Most carbon is C 12  , however about 1.1% of naturally  occurring carbon is C 13 )                     amu  – atomic mass unit approximately equal to the mass of a proton or a  neutron.  Strictly speaking, it is defined to be 1/12 of the atomic mass of C
