Based on the figure answer the following questions A) (5 pts) Indicate on the graph where you would expect the patient to be categorized as having AIDS (you do not have to be exact but try to be accurate). Briefly explain your answer. HIV progresses to AIDS when a significant number or T-lymphocyte (CD4) cells have been destroyed. This usually happens when T-cell counts drop below 200cells/µl blood. Graph: 2 points Explanation: 3 points. (No need for exact number, but that there is a threshold) B) (4 pts) Draw the viral load of two people, one who is likely to progress to AIDS much faster than the other. 2 2 points for each graph. 2. (5 pts) A patient tested positive for HIV using an ELISA test. However, when the same patient was tested using a Western Blot the test was negative. Is the patient likely to be infected with HIV? Which test result do you base your answer on, and why? The patient is most likely HIV –negative. I will base my results on the Western because Elisa is very sensitive but not specific, therefore, will give more false positives. In contrast, a Western is more specific but less sensitive and therefore, a negative result is most likely a real negative. Is the patient likely to be infected: 2 point Which test do you relay: 1 point Why: 2 points. 3. (3 pts) In 2000 the United States Government formally designated the spread of HIV/AIDS as a threat to its national security. This was one rational for creating the $15 billion PEPFAR program (the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief). How might AIDS impact US national security? Briefly explain one reason. Essentially, full credit was given for answers that directly responded to the question and, given what we were expected to know, had no obvious problems or counter-arguments. Many answers, for example, did not take into account that AIDS is treatable with current medications (full credit was given if the student addressed the fact that treatment is expensive or AIDS is deadly if untreated). Some students did not directly address the issue of how U.S. national security would be impacted, but only the destabilizing effects in foreign countries. Sample Correct Answer: In some countries, as much as one-third of the Population is HIV positive and largely without access to medication. A generation of children is growing up as AIDS orphans, too poor and too young to manage the economy and maintain law and order. Economically unstable, lawless countries tend to be breeding grounds for anti-American terrorists.
