1.0.Introduction Project management has emerged as one of the most important areas of business in the 21stCentury. Arguably, the concepts of project management have been transformed since 1950s and1960s, when these concepts were mostly used in large projects in areas such as aerospace andconstruction (Kloppenborg, Anantatmula & Wells 2015, p. 102) and are now being applied tosmaller projects such as renovation of an old beach house cottage. This transformation haslargely been driven by the fact that, whether it is a small or a big project, projects requires one toapply a significant amount of knowledge and skills, as well as employ tools and techniques suchas Gantt chart, to accomplish the objectives of the project. Furthermore, all projects are requiredto undergo a series of activities, which require different time and resources to complete.Kloppenborg et al. (2015, p. 231) have also highlighted the significance of stakeholders in theproject, as well as ensuring that various aspects, which include stakeholder communication aredone well throughout the project lifecycle. Considering these aspects, this project has been developed based on the proposed renovation ofthe old beachside cottage, which requires a great deal of repair work to make it livable.According to the case study, the project will need a period of 2 weeks to complete.Approximately $20,000 will be required to facilitate the resources that are required to complete1Group-113
the renovation of the house. This includes the acquisition of skillful human resources and all thesupplies that are required to complete the renovation of the house. 2.0.Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)The work breakdown structure, according to Kloppenborg et al. (2015, p. 220), should be auniform, consistent and logical method for dividing the project into smaller and manageablecomponents to manage the scope of the project and for planning, estimating and monitoring.Kloppenborg et al. (2015, p. 143) continue describe WBS as project planning tool, which isdefined as the “concept of hierarchical decomposition for transforming the project scope intodeliverable work elements at the highest level” (p. 220). According to Brotherton, Fried andNorman (2008, p. 45), project managers in today’s world have found WBS to be an importantand valuable concept in project management. WBS has been found to be the technique, whichhelps project managers to ensure that the main objectives of the project are completed. The WBSfor the old beachside cottage project is provided below.
